Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is GST?

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. Implemented on July 1, 2017, GST replaced multiple indirect taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty, streamlining the taxation system.

It's a destination-based tax, meaning it's collected at the point of consumption rather than the point of origin. GST is categorized into:

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the central government on intra-state sales
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the state government on intra-state sales
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the central government on inter-state sales
  • UTGST (Union Territory GST): Collected by union territories on sales within the union territory

The GST system operates on a dual model where both the central and state governments levy tax on goods and services. For intra-state transactions, the GST is split equally between CGST and SGST, while for inter-state transactions, only IGST applies.

How does this GST calculator work?

Our GST calculator simplifies tax computations through a straightforward process:

  1. Enter the amount - Input the base amount for which you want to calculate GST.
  2. Select the GST rate - Choose from standard rates like 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%, or enter a custom rate.
  3. Choose the tax type - Specify whether the amount is GST-inclusive (extract GST) or GST-exclusive (add GST).
  4. Select the state type - Choose between intra-state (CGST + SGST) or inter-state (IGST) transactions.

The calculator will then compute:

  • The base amount (before or after GST, depending on your selection)
  • The GST amount
  • A breakdown of CGST and SGST for intra-state transactions or IGST for inter-state transactions
  • The total amount (including GST)

You can also save your calculations for future reference or print them for your records.

What's the difference between inclusive and exclusive GST?

Exclusive GST (Add GST): This is when GST is added on top of the base amount. For example, if an item costs ₹100 and the GST rate is 18%, the GST amount would be ₹18, making the total price ₹118.

Inclusive GST (Extract GST): This is when the given amount already includes GST, and you want to find out the base amount and the GST component. For example, if the total price is ₹118 with an 18% GST rate, the base amount would be ₹100 and the GST amount would be ₹18.

The formula for calculating exclusive GST is:

GST Amount = Base Amount × GST Rate / 100

The formula for calculating inclusive GST is:

GST Amount = Total Amount - (Total Amount / (1 + GST Rate / 100))

Our calculator handles both types of calculations automatically based on your selection.

What are the current GST rates in India?

India follows a multi-tiered GST structure with the following rates:

  • 0% (Nil rate): Essential goods and services like fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, education services, and healthcare services
  • 5%: Basic necessities like packaged food items, transport services, small restaurants, and economy class air tickets
  • 12%: Standard goods like frozen meat products, butter, ghee, business hotels, and work contracts
  • 18%: Standard services and goods like IT services, telecom services, financial services, and most manufactured goods
  • 28%: Luxury items and sin goods like premium cars, tobacco products, aerated drinks, and high-end motorcycles

Additionally, there are special rates for specific items:

  • 0.25%: Rough precious and semi-precious stones
  • 3%: Gold, silver, and jewelry

These rates are subject to change based on government decisions and GST Council recommendations. Always verify the current applicable rates from official sources.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

The GST system in India is divided into three main components:

  • CGST (Central GST): This is the portion of GST that goes to the central government. It applies to intra-state transactions (sales within the same state).
  • SGST (State GST): This is the portion of GST that goes to the state government. It also applies to intra-state transactions.
  • IGST (Integrated GST): This applies to inter-state transactions (sales between different states) and is collected by the central government, which later distributes the appropriate share to the relevant state.

For intra-state transactions, the GST rate is split equally between CGST and SGST. For example, if the GST rate is 18%, then 9% would be CGST and 9% would be SGST.

For inter-state transactions, the entire GST amount is levied as IGST. For example, if the GST rate is 18%, then the entire 18% would be IGST.

Our calculator automatically shows the appropriate breakdown based on whether you select intra-state or inter-state transaction.
